The icon that is Peter Murphy will forever be remembered as a founding member and lead singer of the 80s goth and post-punk band Bauhaus. The band is part of his legend, but fans of Peter Murphy know that his most prolific career has come as a solo artist. Bauhaus was incredibly active in the early 80s, releasing four albums between 1980 and 1984. It was after the band’s 1984 album Burning from the Inside, that Murphy started his solo career. That career now spans ten albums- a worthy feat that is being celebrated on a huge North American tour for the release of Lion. Murphy spoke with the Chicago Sun-Times about his solo career recently:
“I didn’t start as a musician or composer,” Murphy says. “I’m still not, really. I’m more like a Pollack-type. I splash onto things, and wade in. Remember, I learned my craft with my brothers in Bauhaus. They would come up with very oblique and atypical song forms. I had to learn how to forge into that as a vocalist.”
Regardless of how Murphy looks at himself, it’s without a doubt that his loyal followers revere him as a performer and musician. Peter Murphy is bringing his North American tour in support of Lion to the Fonda Theatre on July 3rd and it’s our Show of the Month at the historic venue in Los Angeles. The Fonda is where Murphy recorded his live DVD release back in July of 2013, calling the show “one of the most amazing nights of (his) career”.
