This Show Alert goes out to all the “dirty dancing, cursing, back-masking, back-slitting pastor’s kids” – Jonathan “Yoni” Wolf, a.k.a. mastermind behind WHY?….ehh…errr maybe just those who are looking for some great live music. Wolf, co-founder of LA-based Anticon, and company (Josiah Wolf, Doug McDiarmid, and Liz Hodson) are taking their act on the road in August and September.
Cincinnati-originated and Oakland-based WHY? are slated to hit the Echoplex in LA and the Great American Music Hall in SF next month, August 28th and 30th respectively, as part of a two-month end-of-summer tour. This pair of shows brings much needed musical refreshment to the post-Coachella and post-Outside Lands monotony here on the West Coast. For all your lyrical-based indie/prog/folk/hip-hop(?) needs, let Yoni and Co. paint you a picture. Tickets are $15 plus fees for the Echoplex show in Los Angeles, and $18 plus fees for the Great American Music Hall show in San Francisco. These shows and are a sure bet not to disappoint. Especially if you dont feel like driving to Illinois for The Gathering.
Check out WHY? live in Berlin. Notice the clear passion behind the lyrics, second to none, and reminiscent of the late At the Drive-In.
We don’t always know what Yoni Wolf is up to, but what we can confirm is new music coming from WHY? in August. Those with tickets should be among the first to hear the new material live. In the meantime, Stereogum is featuring a preview of the new material. And if it turns out that WHY? are less revealing at the show, have no fear! Here is the last setlist from their tour in March. Pretty nice of them to put crowd favorites like “The Vowel’s pt. 2”, “These Few Presidents”, and “The Hollows” back to back like that. These songs will inspire anyone to start ripping rhymes in the shower.
Still wondering if you should see WHY? live? The answer is yes. “WHY?” Because nobody really wants to put on all that juggalo face paint, but if you do make it to the Midwest be sure to hug-a-jug-a-lo for me ;).
Snapshot: Yoni shows his true roots in this clip: Writing vocal rhythms with deconstructed beats underneath.
