Tis’ not only the season to be jolly, but to also get your dance on at one of the most historic venues in modern music history… the Fillmore SF! Ozomatli will be featured on both Friday and Saturday night just in time to dance off the Thanksgiving gluttony while still allowing enough time to pick up those last minute gifts (including the signature Fillmore free concert poster). Sheer scheduling perfection.
Ozomatli is a Los Angeles based fusion band with enough scope to please anybody who loves live music. Their style has been dubbed “world-fusion funk” by certain sources, but has definitive roots in Latin rock and hip-hop. The live performance is simply awesome and features a 7-10 piece band playing an array of funked-out and jazzy rock tunes that feature hip-hop style lyrics and delivery. The stage production is simple and without too many visuals aside from the shiny horns, fresh dress of the band, and some awesome dance moves.
The group is now going on their 14th year as Ozomatli, a name that comes from an ancient Aztec astrological symbol for “monkey,” but also corresponds to the god of dance, fire, and music; quite befitting if you ask me. 4 full length studio albums have been put out since 1998, with the latest, Fire Away produced by Downtown Records, hitting the shelves in 2010. Check out the rest of their culture on the band’s official website. Current touring members include: Justin “El Nino” Poree on assorted percussion and vocals, Asdrubal Sierra on trumpet and vocals, Mario Calire on the drum set, and Ulises Bella on saxophone and back-up vocals. This charismatic bunch of musicians can throw down the set and get the booties shaking. Trust me…I caught their show last year… ¡Dios Mio Mami!
