Hot off the heels of a highlight-worthy performance on the Panhandle Stage at Outside Lands, MS MR are launching a national tour. Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow have two sold out shows in San Francisco and the greater Los Angeles area, but there are still tickets available to MS MR and Wildcat! Wildcat! at The Independent on October 21.
MS MR’s signature deep, thunderous sound is nothing if not theatrical. If the pair’s Outside Lands performance is any indication, the theatrical elements of MS MR transcend music and are the center piece of a live show. Plapinger, with her fiery multi-colored hair, bounces around while crooning her often brooding lyrics. Hershenow holds steadfast behind his keys set up as Plapinger dances seductively to the crowd. The pair are joined by a third member to fill out percussion for MS MR’s stage performance. Secondhand Raptures, MS MR’s debut studio full length, has a depth that, at first blush, would seem difficult to translate to a live rendition. Fret not, as MS MR are able to translate their recorded production to an unforgettable theatrical live production.
Offering support for MS MR is California’s own Wildcat! Wildcat! The trio had a disappointing headlining show at the Brick and Mortar Music Hall in San Francisco, but to no fault of their own (come on, Brick and Mortar, get your sound and act together). Back in April, Wildcat! Wildcat! warmed up The Independent stage for Portugal. The Man and won the crowd over. Although Wildcat! Wildcat!’s surf pop sound is not necessarily the first act that comes to mind to open up for MS MR, but Wildcat! Wildcat!’s undeniably catchy pop undercurrents are fun in any setting. In the least, you can check out their cover of Tears for Fear’s “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, which is synthrockin’.
