Here’s a First Friday show to rule them all: Mexican supergroup Kinky will be appearing at the Natural History Museum on May 1st for the second-to-last installment of the museum’s First Friday series for 2015. So freshly announced that it’s not even up on the NHM’s website yet, you’ll want to keep a close eye come April 1st so you can score tickets to see the Latin Grammy nominated band as soon as they’re made available.
Kinky’s music defies easy categorization, but you’ve probably heard them before, whether you realize it or not. Their music is repeatedly heralded for standing “beyond the realm of geographic or demographic categorization, and most certainly beyond cultural expectations or stereotypes.” And their style changes rapidly, jumping from dance rock riffs to synthetic arpeggio to accordion, sometimes all within a single hip-shaking track. From being featured on Weeds and Dexter to the Tiger Woods PGA Golf Tour 08 game, the Latin Grammy nominees make dance-rock music reminiscent of the Chemical Brothers with a decidedly Latin bent.
“Mas” appeared in films Man on Fire, Thirteen, and Nisson Altima commercials in 2002.
Every First Friday this year has sold out in advance, and with extended museum hours, great DJs and bands filling the halls with music, and drinks to boot, (never mind DINOSAURS) if you’ve never been before, this is the show to catch.
No word yet on who else will be playing on May 1st, but you can expect a solid lineup nonetheless. And if you can’t wait til May, there are still tickets available for the April 10th First Friday, which will feature the bands White Fence and musical prodigies Cherry Glazerr, as well as Raul Campos and Sayers Club regular Anthony Valadez DJing. Visitors will also have access to the museum’s Dinosaur Hall, Gem and Mineral Room, and the Becoming LA exhibit, in addition to a host of other permanent collections.
