The summer music festival circuit kickoffs around the world around this time of year and there’s no shortage of amazing festivals that you can attend. While everyone knows the names of the big boys, some of this summer’s best festivals might be right in your backyard. Take the California Roots Music & Arts Festival in Monterey for example- a 3 day music festival bringing in 48 bands from around the world to 3 stages. Now in it’s fifth year, the festival focuses on the reggae-rock genre that Sublime brought to the main stream of music culture. While Sublime was instrumental in bringing the genre to the masses, the current crop of artists that make up the 48 bands for this year’s festival are leading the way today. Damian and Ziggy Marley will be joining other festival headliners SOJA, Steel Pulse, Rebelution and 311. There’s a lot more to the California Roots Festival, so let’s get you up to speed.
While the festival is packing the lineup with talent for the 3 day experience, festival founders Jeff Monser and Dan Sheehan are two guys that appreciate history. The main stage area was the site where the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival took place- the historic lineup that included Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, The Who, Janis Joplin and Jefferson Airplane just to name a few. During the first four years of the festival, artists performing at California Roots did not take that historic stage to perform, but with a record attendance of 23,500 last year and an expected 30,000 this year, the festival finally moves to the main stage. This is a big year for the festival, and the organizers know it. The problem is, so do a lot of the fans that have been attending for the past five years. Saturday and Sunday single day tickets are already sold out, so that just leaves Friday night left. If you want to be a part of the experience this year, now is the time to grab tickets at the link below:

There’s a ton going on at California Roots and along the sunny California Central Coast, it’s a festival that is going to keep on growing. Stay tuned to the pages here for a full festival preview.
