In anticipation of Buckcherry’s return to the Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood next week, Rabbits Black spoke to Buckcherry’s lead guitarist Keith Nelson to get the inside track on the band’s new album, their personal history at the Whisky, and of course tattoos.
Buckcherry is an American hard rock band that formed in 1995. Their latest album Rock ‘n’ Roll recorded at The Bastard Ranch in Los Angeles was released in August of this year and is the band’s 7th studio album.
Keith Nelson is a rare breed, a talented and successful musician with tattoos and the hair to prove it, but also an intellectual with a great handle on the business side of the industry. Nelson said he grew up in Pennsylvania and was a criminology major that wanted to go to law school before making a right turn and heading to LA to be a rocker in the early 1990’s. He met frontman Josh Todd through their tattoo artist Kevin Quinn and Buckcherry was born.
Their first show ever was at, you guessed it, the Whisky A Go Go! You can’t separate the band from their origins and Buckcherry has always had a close relationship with the classic Sunset Blvd landmark. They even played the 50-year anniversary of the Whisky so we know the loving feeling is mutual.
Their latest tour started in September and is beginning its West Coast swing as we speak. The tour will go through North America this year, and is expected go international sometime next year. While they have a whole album of new material to use, Nelson said the band plays songs off all of their albums during their shows. “We have seven records so we have a lot of material to choose from,” Nelson told us. “It is a seat of our pants operation every time we go onstage.”
“We don’t play the pre-recorded bullshit so we can change the set list on the fly and make songs longer or shorter.”
Buckcherry has also created their own label, F-Bomb records, which released their last two albums Confessions (2013) and Rock ‘n’ Roll (2015). After so many years in the industry Nelson said this new endeavor is a fun challenge and gives him the opportunity to use his experience to benefit younger artists. “Hopefully we can find like-minded artists to be on the label so we can help direct them and impart some of our hard earned wisdom.”
Ultimately, Nelson’s wisdom extends beyond just the music industry. He also knows quite a bit about tattoos. He did meet Josh Todd through a tattoo artist after all and got his first tattoo at age 18. His advice for anyone looking to get some ink? Choose wisely and remember it doesn’t wash off!
Buckcherry will performing October 13 at the world famous Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood. Purchase tickets HERE.
