Bob Dylan has long been associated with political and social issues and his songs became synonymous with the protest movements in the 1960’s. Today, his politically charged rhetoric has been used by the “Occupy” movements and in major political protests throughout the world. ..And given the current state of politics in our country and elsewhere maybe it isn’t a major suprise that so many young musicians would take so quickly to the idea of a Dylan trubute album. But Ke$ha covering “Don’t Think Twice”? Definitely didn’t see that coming.
Josh Homme, frontman of Queens of the Stone Age who covered Dylan’s “Outlaw Blues” on Chimes of Freedom, in a recent interview spoke about his involvement in the project: “When so many people hear your voice, you just feel like it’s time to start saying something that should be heard, …. I’ve done so much press over the years. It’s great to talk about a new record and it’s a beautiful thing to make one, but it’s something else to be part of something that helps human rights…. At some point it starts to turn around and you feel like you finally have enough power to do something. If you don’t do something to help somebody else, then you’re using that power for the wrong reason.”
One thing is for sure, this album is chalked full of great artists covering one of the greatest songwriters of all time.
