Metallica are a big band. They can pretty much do what they want these days, and when they decide they want to start their own damn music festival, they’ll do just that! Today, Metallica announced the creation of a new summer music festival in the United States that will kick-off in 2012. The two day festival is called Orion Music + More, and will take place June 23-24 at Bader Field in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Take a guess at who is headlining?!
We have to admit, the name of the festival just sounds silly. First, there is a “+” sign in the official name, and second it sounds like fictional music festival from the next Men In Black movie. We aren’t stoked on the name, but the lineup is coming together nicely:
Metallica • Arctic Monkeys • Avenged Sevenfold
Modest Mouse • The Gaslight Anthem
Cage The Elephant • Fucked Up • Best Coast
Hot Snakes • Titus Andronicus
Gary Clark Jr. • Lucero • Roky Erickson
The Black Angels • The Sword
A Place to Bury Strangers • Liturgy
Now that’s a good start to something new. The Sword, The Black Angels, Liturgy, A Place To Bury Strangers, Lucero- all are going to be rad and bring something different to the table. These bands are not making the normal festival rounds, and that already makes this one of the best rock festivals on the East Coast. Now back to the weird and egotistical part, apparently there will be a “lifestyle” element that “reflects each of Metallica’s band members many personal interests”. Um, OK. Will there be carnival rides and saucer cups where you can take a ride in the “mind” of the band members as well? How about face painting booths where you can swap your face with the beautiful visage of your favorite Metallica member!?
There are a few silly things in this announcement, and we are sure Orion Music + will have some growing pains, but the good news is that Metallica is putting on a music festival and it should include some awesome rock n’ roll bands. Don’t expect David Guetta or Kanye West to get an invite anytime soon, and that’s something we all can agree is a good thing.
