Charlie Kubal, also known as wait what and the producer behind mixtapes such as the notorious xx, this is real life, nased out and most recently, Tingo, played a great show at Public Works on Friday night. Public Works is a Mission favorite for hipster jams, and the performance on the main stage had the whole place shakin’ their groove thangs.
The energy wait what has on stage was met, if not exceeded, by the crowd. You can tell he’s having fun, which becomes contagious. Drummer and close friend Will Paulus played alongside wait what, and the two were obviously having a great time. It was packed and people were bumping into each other left and right. The sloppy crowd made me feel like I was at a college party and it was only fitting that the show ended with the audience rushing the stage to dance and crowd surf.
Being a huge fan of the notorious xx mixtape – a mellow mashup of Notorious B.I.G. and the xx – I was happy to see wait what still played some shoe-gazing tracks for the amped-up crowd. I just about died when I heard his new “Next Episode/Hypnotize” mashup, which only intrigues me to see what he’ll be coming out with next. Honestly, who doesn’t love Dr. Dre and Biggie? Wait what’s affinity for layering classic hip hop tracks over new indie jams seem like an unlikely mashup success story, but it works.
Other highlights from the night were when wait what dropped the songs “take a walk with bonnie & clyde” (Jay-Z & Beyoncé vs Passion Pit) and “hey glass table girls” (Cam’ron & Juelz Santana vs The Weeknd). Another great aspect of the show (especially for all the bleeding hearts out there) was that proceeds went to 826 Valencia, Dave Eggers’ non-profit dedicated to helping children and young adults express their creativity through the written word.
All in all, the show was a great time, and by the looks of Public Works on Friday night, I was definitely not the only one who thought so. In short, wait what has great taste in music; and you know what they say about good taste, it’s as tiring as good company.
If you want to help out a great cause and check out more mashups from wait what, visit his website and peruse his free download section, which also features a pay-what-you-want system that sends all proceeds to 826 Valencia.
DJ wait what, you continue to impress. Can’t wait for next time.
