Ever wish you could join Don Draper at a cozy little lounge, sipping on some fine whiskey? You might have some trouble making that date with Don (we hear his schedule is pretty packed), but Naked Fiction will carry you back to the soulful, jazzy lounge vibe so prevalent in the 1960s. Carmen King fronts the San Francisco locals, and her years of experience as a jazz singer shine through each song. Backing Ms. King’s captivating voice is a six-piece ensemble, consisting of a violin, viola, upright bass, guitar, keys, and drums. Read more and check out some of their music after the jump.
I discovered Naked Fiction while checking out 50 Mason Social House, a new lounge in the heart of downtown San Francisco that offers live music almost every night. The small club has a small, elevated stage in the back, lounge chairs throughout the bar, and a great beer and wine selection. As soon as Naked Fiction began setting up, I knew I was going to be pleasantly surprised. Each musician individually is extremely talented in their own right, evidenced by their intricate arrangements. Carmen King’s voice instantly transforms any room into a decades-old jazz lounge. Together, Naked Fiction prove that San Francisco’s local music scene is alive, thriving, and as diverse as ever.
Naked Fiction has a strong portfolio of original compositions, and also boasts some fantastic rearrangements of Top 40 hits. Ever think you’d like Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks”? I didn’t, either – until I heard Naked Fiction’s rendition of the song. The beat and vibe of the song went along so well with the sultry, sexy, and slowed down jazz spin Naked Fiction placed on it. The band’s stylings are reminiscent of Portishead, with a hint of the string arrangements of early 2000s Cursive. You can see how Naked Fiction are the perfect candidates to pick up a residency at 50 Mason Social House. Hint hint.
Check out the band’s website at www.nakedfictionmusic.com. They currently don’t have any upcoming shows, but the group plays at least once a month in the Bay Area. Keep your eyes out and Rabbits Black will give you heads up when they announce another gig!
Until then, check out a few of their songs and let us know what you think.
