Loud, fast, heavy distortion, and reverb is what comes to mind when thinking about LA based band Dum Dum Girls and San Diego’s Crocodiles, and that’s exactly what I got at the Troubadour, all in support of Dum Dum Girl’s latest album “Only in Dreams.”
Solo act, Colleen Green opened the show with her electric guitar and drum machine. With her fuzzy 80’s pop sound and catchy lyrics she laid the foundation out on what was in store for the wrest of the night. In between sets the venue was playing songs from the Smiths, Ramones, Iggy and the Stooges, and The Jesus and Mary Chain, setting the mood even further for these two post-punk groups.
Crocodiles finally took the stage. They started with Mirrors off of their 2010 album “Sleep Forever,” Their set was a steady stream of heavy distorted bass and electric guitar topped off with a lovely duet with Dum Dum Girl’s lead singer, Dee Dee, on the song I Wanna Kill off of Crocodile’s debut album “Summer of Hate.” Every song was a definite crowd pleaser but the one that took the cake for me was Neon Jesus because of the shear power that song had.
Still dazed from the insanity of the Crocodiles, Dum Dum Girls came out. They opened the set with Always Looking, off of “Only in Dreams.” Dum Dum Girls did an amazing job at recreating the sounds off of their albums but they had a much louder and heavier sound that really got the crowd swaying and moving and Dee Dee’s voice was simply flawless. Next time either Dum Dum Girls or Crocodiles roll into town be sure not to miss them. They both really put on an amazing show that will leave you shell-shocked for a couple of days and wanting more.
