Last year’s inaugural Further Future festival was the most interesting Burning Man-related event to emerge in years. Rather than simply attempting to recreate the playa on a smaller scale — as many regional BM-related events do — the organizers, who are also behind the Robot Heart art car, took a different tack. By combining the aesthetics and music of Burning Man with TED-style talks and (expensive) creature comforts, they created a new kind of festival experience, something like a large-scale, arty bourgeois reimagination of the traditional salon (with more desert and deep house of course).
While the event didn’t go off without a hitch — a last-minute venue change meant that main stage was still under construction on Sunday morning — it was still a top-notch debut. There was no better place to hear great music in an intimate setting, listen to talks on art and music, and meet interesting people — think Summit Series with music, or South by Southwest with fewer people and more curated art.
This year the event will be taking place from April 29 to May 1, 2016 — again on an indian reservation in the desert outside Las Vegas — and the line-up is exceptional. From Leftfield, Dixon and Four Tet to Burridge, Jaar, and recent Grammy nominee Caribou (aka. Daphni), the music skews electronic, but also has fantastic live acts like Easy Star All-Stars. Other highlights include Rival Consoles, Daedelus, and Rampue.
