The Flaming Lips once again broke with convention by playing an impromptu 6 a.m. show at the Hollywood Forever bell tower on Santa Monica Boulevard. The band was joined by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros for a 12 minute rendition of the Flaming Lips’ song “Do You Realize.” The performance was driven by use of the actual cemetery bells and included some more unique instruments such as a large bowl full of water.
Frontman Wayne Coyne started off the first of their two night concert series at the Hollywood Forever cemetery with the announcement that they would start the following morning off with this sunrise bell tower show. The bands played to about 50 people, many of whom were still dressed in the costumes or makeup they wore to the Lips’ Tuesday night performance of their 1999 album The Soft Bulletin.
There was no sun this morning; it was a hazy dawn in LA. But, just as Wayne sings: “You realize the sun doesn’t go down, it’s just an illusion caused by the world spinning round!” Its nights and mornings like this that make LA such an amazing place to live.
