This week’s Coachella Primer features LA’s own Steven Ellison, a.k.a. Flying Lotus, and we couldn’t have better timing! Coming off the heels of announcing the tentative title and release of his upcoming album on “The Champs” podcast, Flying Lotus is generating a lot of buzz around town as we stand six weeks out from Coachella’s kick off. Having released his first album in 2006, Flying Lotus is no stranger to the Los Angeles music scene. He returns this year to Coachella — he played in 2010 — to present his next album, “Until the Quiet Comes”.
Often associated with Madlib, J Dilla, and Gaslamp Killer, Flying Lotus is now an institution of the Los Angeles electronic music scene. Known for his unique blend of jazz- and hip-hop- influenced chiptune stylings (think atmospheric 8-bit jams), Flying Lotus has worked with such notable names as Thom Yorke (remember how Yorke made a surprise appearance at Low End Theory last year? You can thank FlyLo for that), Erykah Badu, and Burial. FlyLo popped into the LA music and production scene seemingly out of nowhere in the mid-2000’s and quickly generated a strong following, partly due to his relentless work ethic, and partly because he brought something new and unique to Los Angeles.
In addition to taking LA by storm, FlyLo helped establish Low End Theory as the place to be on Wednesday nights in LA, and the first Friday of every month in San Francisco. With three critically acclaimed albums under his belt, Flying Lotus’s next album will not disappoint.
There still remains some speculation over the release date of FlyLo’s next album. He mentioned June on “The Champs,” but tweeted that it “won’t be out in June… most likely later.” Amid the swirling rumors, however, you can be sure of one thing: Flying Lotus will be presenting his latest creation at Coachella 2012. Hailed as one of the best acts you didn’t see at Coachella 2010, don’t miss your chance to see how much FlyLo has grown in the past two years.
