Flower-punk is back baby! It’s been three years since the Black Lips released their last album, the playful 2011 release Arabia Mountain. The lead single “Modern Art” from Arabia Mountain was one of our favorite singles from that year and is still a staple in our summer time playlists and DJ sets. Things might be a little different this time around, as the first single from the upcoming new album Underneath The Rainbow has a much more serious feel. Check out the single “Boys In The Wood” here:
Underneath The Rainbow will be out on March 18th and shortly after the album release and some shows at SXSW in Austin, the boys from Atlanta will be running through the West Coast with six California tour dates. We love this tour already! With stops in Pioneertown and Felton, things are going to get weird. The band returns to the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles on March 21st- the site of their last live show in LA. San Francisco gets wet and wild at the Great American Music Hall on the 24th. The Coathangers will be joining the Lips on all of their California dates.
It’s going to be interesting to see where the Black Lips go with their seventh studio album. The band is working with Charles Bradley’s music director Tommy Brenneck on this album. We love us some Charles Bradley and his 2013 release Victim Of Love was one of the best albums of the year, but that’s a much more serious record than anything the Lips have put out. Are the boys settling down a bit? Or are we just being set up to be set on fire and puked on in Pioneertown? We’ll let you know as soon as we get our hands on some new music from Underneath The Rainbow. Check out the California dates below and stay tuned.
