the sister ruby band interview marlon Rabenreither

Show Preview & Interview: The Sister Ruby Band @ O’Brien’s 6/15

Tomorrow night in Santa Monica we are bringing together two of our favorite bands on this coast.  The Sister Ruby Band hail from Los Angeles, but their sound brings together the spirits of Americana rock n’ roll.  Zodiac Death Valley are making the journey down the coast from San Francisco where they have been hailed as one of the city’s best local bands.  With a special opening set by Jess Furman and a closing DJ set by Rabbits Black, all of it comes together tomorrow night in an intimate setting that promises fans a show that they’ll be able to feel and hear up close and personal.  We talked with Marlon Rabenreither, the soul of The Sister Ruby Band, about tomorrow’s show and what the band has been working on this year. Zodiac Death Valley talks to Rabbits (An Interview)

Zodiac Death Valley (ZDV) released their debut self-titled album back in 2011.  When we got it here in our offices we instantly loved it.  Yeah, we admittedly have a soft spot for San Francisco bands that know how to rock and have a good time, but the album instantly came off as a well thought-out debut release that harkened back to the sounds of early Black Rebel Motorcycle Club albums with a heavy influence from the likes of The Doors.  Lofty comparisons, but the album delivered on that type of early excitement for the band.  ZDV has laid low for most of 2012, playing a scattering of shows in Los Angeles and San Francisco, but there are big things in the works for 2013.  Your chance to see Zodiac Death Valley in a small music room like O’Brien’s might not be around for too much longer.  We caught up with the frontman of ZDV, Nic Abodeely, before Saturday’s show to peer into the world of Zodiac Death Valley. A ranking of the best Queens of the Stone Age albums of all time

Queens of the Stone Age are no longer the best kept secret in rock n’ roll.  I used to think of them that way, my favorite band that most people had never heard of.  Drug-induced psych rock stoner metal- the genre wasn’t even accessible to fans not in the know (or the fade).  They are the opposite of a secret at this point- a living rock n’ roll legend of our time.  I read a full feature piece on Queens last week on…you know, the sports and pop culture website owned by ESPN.  If ESPN is sponsoring articles about Queens of the Stone Age then good luck scoring PIT tickets for their upcoming tour because everyone is in on it now.  But let’s put the hype to the side for a second and take a look back at the albums created by Joshua Homme and his revolving cast of supporting characters.  (more…)

Live Review: Scott Weiland @ House of Blues Sunset 5/29 (with commentary on the current Stone Temple Pilots fued)

scott weiland wildabouts house of blues sunset live review

Amazingly enough, Scott Weiland took the stage only 30 minutes after the scheduled 9:15 PM start time.  Let’s be honest, no one really thought Scott and his new backing band The Wildabouts would actually make a 9:15 start on the Sunset Strip at the House of Blues.  Not in LA, not Scott Weiland.  That’s why the 30 minute tardiness was easily excused- and actually a pleasant surprise to some who probably thought they could show up at 11 PM and still be staring at curtains over the stage.  This initial feeling summed up the night pretty well actually- some excusable moments that you just learn to live with because the highs can still be pretty damn satisfying.  So it was at Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts performance on Wednesday night at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip. Show Alert: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club @ The Observatory (Santa Ana) 6/2

Robert Been, Peter Hayes and Leah Shapiro make up one of rock n’ roll’s hardest working bands.  Constantly touring and delivering quality albums, 2013 has been another amazing year for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club supporting their latest album Specter At The Feast.  It’s been an emotional tour and album release following the death of Robert’s father Michael Been who was everything from producer, sound engineer, mentor, and father to the members of BRMC.  This powerful run of live shows comes to a US conclusion on June 2nd at The Observatory in Santa Ana.
