So you made it to Coachella! Temperatures are already in the 80s, your sweating and dirty, and the bands haven’t even started yet. Tomorrow is a great day to cool off by the pool and soak in the sun, but on Friday there are bands to see. We break down the bands you cant’t miss, and a few of the ones you should avoid at all costs. Friends don’t let friends listen to crappy music. Have fun out there and use this guide to steer you in the right direction.
Bold selections, go and see. Red selections, don’t tell us we didn’t warn you.
Friday, April 12 and 19
Blur – Damon Albarn not in cartoon form!
The Stone Roses
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Karen O will go down as one of the most awesome chicks in rock n roll ever. A headliner that is accessible by everyone.
Lou Reed – The Man. The Myth. The Legend. Reed embodies the very essence of Rock and Roll. Go and pay tribute.
Grinderman – Check out Nick Cave’s hard rock outfit that is even more menacing than his solo work.
Bassnectar – The Bay Area native will without a doubt put on a visual and audio feast that will shake the grounds of the Polo Fields.
How to Destroy Angels – It will be hard to find a better light show and stage production at Coachella this year. Make sure to cheer your head off every time Trent touches the mic.
Passion Pit – Enjoy their frenetic & ephemeral tunes, or catch Michael Angelakos having a nervous breakdown. Hopefully just the former.
Tegan and Sara
Band of Horses
Of Monsters and Men
Thomas Gold – If big hooks and vocal melodies are your type of house music, you can’t go wrong with Thomas Gold.
the Shouting Matches
Alt-J – This quirky band is about to blow up Stateside (Their debut album, “An Awesome Wave”, took the Mercury Music Prize in 2012.) Check out the ear worm “Breezeblocks” and stick around for more pensive and beautiful music from this English ensemble.
Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine
Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra
Purity Ring – The Canadian electro band brings their act to the big stage without the fluff of today’s popular shoegaze bands.
Lee Scratch Perry
Jamie xx – Avoid the shit show for the xx by catching Jamie today.
IO Echo – Selected as the opener for some of the biggest bands in the world, catch them early in the day.
the Neighbourhood – Show up late to Coachella on purpose this year.
